Mr Gopi Natarajan, CEO, Omega Health Care Ltd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On the\u00a0 penultimate day of the foundation fortnight, the students had with them Mr. Gopi Natarajan, CEO, Omega Health Care Ltd. Happy to be with the youngsters, Natarajan also admired the \u00a0galaxy of speakers who had earlier interacted with the students during the foundation. He asked the young audience what had made them choose MBA over other career options. A girl among the students said she wanted to become a\u00a0 become a “better version” of herself. Another student a boy shared the fact that he had started a venture after his graduation and wanted to learn the the ropes of the business and management; And that explained his presence there.<\/p>\n

Natarajan, then briefly recounted his successful career trajectory in USA, where he had spent 25 years before venturing into \u00a0entrepreneurship. Today, his company has\u00a0 offices in USA and Europe. However, he said, the company has recently opened an office in Trichy, a tier II town in Tamil Nadu . The rationale behind the move, that too, to a tier II city, as\u00a0 he shared was the\u00a0 availability of talent in the region which also would catalyse the\u00a0 economic growth and development, there. And would also create\u00a0 employment. Also the\u00a0 region was\u00a0 quieter, greener and hence idyllic. It also gave him respite from the infamous\u00a0 Bangalore traffic.<\/p>\n

The Young Audience <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The tenor of the talks being \u2018Entrepreneurship\u2019, Natarajan extolled the virtue of\u00a0 taking risks in the world of business.\u00a0 He\u00a0 said he was aware of the widely prevalent Indian mindset\u00a0 which abhorred\u00a0 risk and failure. He\u00a0 confessed of the fear of failure in his\u00a0 hey days because of the \u00a0punishment\u00a0 tagged with it. He also brought up the issue \u00a0of parents being \u00a0more stressed about \u00a0their children’s academics and future, than the children themselves. So insane an attitude.<\/p>\n

He told the audience that as they gain experience in life and grew they would learn from failures too.He cited examples of some well considered e-commerce companies, which had initially \u00a0failed\u00a0 in their business models. All business ideas cannot be successful, he said sharing the example of his\u00a0 new\u00a0 venture in Healthcare in USA. The venture could not work out hence \u00a0he exited. But the failure did not deter his passion for entrepreneurship. And later\u00a0 Omega Healthcare was born. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Natarajan \u00a0further expounded the importance of selecting investors judiciously. He said the market is flooded with investors \u2013 angle investors, venture capitalist, and family managed business. There was\u00a0 a ‘dumb money and smart money’\u00a0 philosophy which he personally adhered to\u00a0 while seeking funds for his business.\u00a0 Before allowing investors to invest , one should ask for references in the market\/industry . It is imperative to understand whether the investment is short term or long term. If an investor is just seeking 5 x multiplies for his investment then \u2013 one should walk away from such a deal. He further said the owner should always have control over the \u00a0company. Wisdom lies in welcoming investors who along with profits have long term growth and commitment on mind.<\/p>\n

Advisory board is\u00a0 the core of a new company . It brings to the table experience, expertise and intellectual capital. In the same context he advised\u00a0 the students to read the book \u2018Crossing the Castle\u2019. <\/em><\/strong>Be committed and passionate.\u00a0 Money is important but route one takes is equally important.<\/p>\n

Outlining his experience of entrepreneurship and work culture in USA and India, he shared in his observation that the\u00a0 levels of creativity and application which are almost \u00a0missing in India are contrastingly high in USA\u00a0 these are high. In USA companies encourage employees to be creative and cited the example of Google \u2013 where the company has announced that 80% of products in future would be next generation product and hence it is mandatory for each employee to spend two \u00a0hours daily\u00a0 for creative upliftment. Speaking on Healthcare Industry, he said the same was in a\u00a0 nascent stage, hence a lot of scope for action there. He particularly mentioned the\u00a0 electronic medical devices. His\u00a0\u00a0 company\u00a0 had huge data on healthcare and hence offered huge opportunities in Data\u00a0 Analytics, which in turn would\u00a0 help companies\u00a0 design new products.<\/p>\n

The Panel <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Exploring the self. Challenging a task. Isn’t it ? But then that was the core of the panel discussion of the day with Prof AKN Prasad \u00a0 chairing the same. The panel comprised industry leaders who were delighted to be with \u00a0the young audience \u00a0and talking to them on the concept of \u2018 Exploring the self. Mr RK Srinivasa Murthy , Ex CEO, Lotus Control, looked on \u2018Self ‘ as a complex phenomenon comprising\u00a0 physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual elements. When\u00a0 integrated, these result in a pleasant and positive persona. It is a delightful experience and people love working and interacting with such a person. It is the individual who decides whether to evolve or devolve.<\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Mukul\u00a0Saxena\u00a0– Sr. Vice President and Head, Corporate Research and Technology, India – Siemens Technology and Services Pvt Ltd\u00a0spoke briefly about his interest in Mechanical Engineering, which started at an early age, fuelling his dreams and later the higher studies.During his tenure with General Electric Ltd, USA\u00a0 he met the renowned business leader \u2013 Mr. Jack Welch \u2013 who was known for quizzing people during business presentation. When he \u00a0questioned Welch \u2013 what made \u00a0him go for \u00a0a particular business plan, Welch told \u00a0 it was the strong conviction about it. Saxena averred that passion and energy are important for success.<\/p>\n

Recalling\u00a0 his early career, Prof. B.K. Kulkarni, VP Health care Siemens Information Technology Pvt Ltd, shared how after failure he decided to pursue higher education in USA. He told students that it was\u00a0 important for a leader to tell stories to connect with people. Right communication can work wonders. He advised students that \u2018Honesty & Truth\u2019 have unparalleled value.<\/p>\n

Another expert on the panel Mr. Prasad Prabhakar, Director, Human Resources at Trianz, told students to have a good knowledge of self and how one can make\u00a0 a difference.\u00a0 He underlined the importance of\u00a0 active learning\u00a0\u00a0 apart from passive learning which happens via reading and in classrooms.He advised the students to watch Jackie Chan’s \u2013 \u2018Who Am I?<\/p>\n

Kulkarni, advised students the importance of working in teams without \u2018EGO\u2019\u00a0 & \u2018I\u2019while dealing with people. Saxena said he looked for people with strong conviction and belief in self\u00a0 , while hiring people at Siemens Ltd. Murthy in his closing remarks spoke about the importance of converting ideas\u00a0 into ideals.<\/p>\n
