I thought I would do a project that would impress my classmates and my H.O.D. The first day that I entered this hospital, my heart received a jolt. The first week spent there, made me lose my appetite. Neither the resume nor the best project mattered anymore. I wanted to do something for these patients and I had to start from somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>My friends and I volunteered to serve daily meals to almost 300 patients during lunch time. Of course we did our project alongside, but this simple act gave me peaceful sleep at night.<\/p>\n<p>What I experienced at this cancer hospital is something I can never forget. I had to do justice to what I experienced here. So I chose to write about it. The best way to capture its essence was to knit it into a beautiful poem. I hope this poem has struck a chord in your heart too. I want you to share this article with your friends and make them a part of this experience. This is not just another poem rather it is the reality of what goes on in most Hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Smile<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.welingkar.org\/blogs\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/10110089-blond-little-girl-sitting-on-a-wheelchair.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2152\" title=\"10110089-blond-little-girl-sitting-on-a-wheelchair\" src=\"https:\/\/www.welingkar.org\/blogs\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/10110089-blond-little-girl-sitting-on-a-wheelchair-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.welingkar.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/10110089-blond-little-girl-sitting-on-a-wheelchair-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.welingkar.org\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/10110089-blond-little-girl-sitting-on-a-wheelchair.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A score of people, that peculiar smell,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Chaos is exactly what this place would spell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I observed their deformities different from the other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Those accustomed to this monotony wouldn\u2019t bother.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For someone new, this was a horrific sight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Just a day spent here can kill one\u2019s appetite.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I watched their tired bodies move from one counter to another.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Most of them illiterate, asking, \u201cCould you help me brother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A lady working at the counter wore a mask,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Expressionless and emotionless she performed her task.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">However she chatted and laughed with her colleagues all the while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Was it a herculean task to offer the patients a smile?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I moved out of the OPD and walked into the general ward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Patients lay there awaiting their surgery, hoping they\u2019ll be cured.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Many jobs lost, few houses sold, and loans burdened a few more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">They now feel helpless and clueless about what\u2019s next in store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Their files, almost an inch thick, have accumulated bills to be paid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">They count on NGOs to offer them financial aid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Their eyes have shrunk and foreheads are filled with deep creases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The chemo kills even normal cells making them susceptible to new diseases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When will there be a permanent cure to these malignancies?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When will their suffering bodies finally come to ease?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Nor radiation, nor chemo and neither surgery can completely cure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Hence patients and their relatives have to silently endure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As I digested this bitter truth before leaving for the day,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I noticed a girl in a wheel chair who looked my way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She smiled at me so cheerfully that in an instant my apprehensions fled.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like she taught me to smile instead of worry about what lies ahead.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\">Larissa\u00a0Pereira<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\">Welingkar Institute of Management<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: right;\">PGDM-HC (2011-13)<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The best experience according to me is the one that strikes a chord in your heart, and the tune of that chord resonates and lingers in your mind for a long time.
