The Indian retail sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country and globally.. India’s retail growth is largely driven by increasing disposable incomes, favourable demographics, changing lifestyles, growth of the middle class segment and a high level of penetration into urban and rural markets. Despite all these factors, a large portion of the sector still remains unorganized and this only spells out the immense potential that exists for the growth of this industry
At Welingkar, we foresee the mileage that this sector is likely to garner in the years to come and have tailored a management program to equip a student with knowledge and ability to meet and adapt to the changing contours of the sector.
A business management program with a difference, it provides rigorous business and management education in its core offerings of Marketing, Operations, Finance & HR along with a functional super specialization in Retail Management. Upon successful completion of the program, besides a career in the retail sector, this program also provides a solid foundation for employment in any industry which interfaces with retailers.
The PGDM Retail Management program provides a comprehensive view of retailing, an analysis of the retail environment and exposure to issues and developments in the industry. Given the pace at which retailing is changing today, the business environment demands professionals with an ability to learn new skill sets, adapt and think out of the box. This comprehensive training program provides the student with advanced theoretical inputs and also the applications in the business.
Some of the specialized courses taught include - Retail Store Operations, Retail Selling Skills, Consumer Buying Behaviour, Franchising, Retail Law, Buying & Merchandising, Category Management, Visual Merchandising, International Retail and Retail Strategy.
The students of the retail programme also have the opportunity of participating in several prestigious student competitions like the The Retail Futures Challenge at the World Retail Congress. WE SCHOOL was the only Indian B-School that was selected to participate in this competition on a global platform for three years in a row. At the Retail Futures Challenge held in Berlin, 2010 our students won the first prize for visual merchandising at the competition. The concept chosen was "Mumbai MeriJaan" showing the different themes of Mumbai city such as Bollywood [the Indian Film Industry], Chow patty[A popular beach] and the local trains.
